Otunba Samson Adebayo Somotun's journey began on April 20th in Sagamu, where he was born into the esteemed family of Pa Sheu Tijani Somotun of the illustrious Orumale lineage of Batoro, Sagamu, and Alhaja Sinotu Somotun nee Erinmilokun of the renowned Adetu dynasty of Offin Sagamu. Both parents hailed from royal lineages, instilling in young Bayo a heritage of dignity and honor from birth. Affectionately known as "Bayo" by his mother and close companions, his early education took place at Saint Paul School (Alagbon) Sagamu, and Saint Paul School Makun Sagamu. He furthered his academic pursuits at Remo Secondary School (R.S.S.), Sagamu, graduating in 1956.
After a brief stint in Ibadan from 1957 to 1958, Otunba Samson Somotun ventured into the banking sector, joining Barclays Bank Plc (now Union Bank Plc) at the Ebute Metta, Oyingbo branch. His quest for higher education led him to the United Kingdom alongside the late Taiwo Tikare, where he pursued accountancy studies with diligence, completing them in record time. In 1968, armed with his ACCA qualification, he returned to Nigeria, where he commenced employment at United African Company (UAC) Plc before assuming the role of Company Secretary and Accounts Manager at Nigerian Breweries Ltd in 1969. His career trajectory saw him serve as the Company Secretary at LSDPC in 1979 and later as the General Manager at Africana Breweries Plc, Ibadan, from 1985 to 1988. Upon relocating to Lagos, he co-established the private firm Olujuwon Adesina and Co with the late Chief Olajuwon Adesina, before serving as the Financial Administrator of C.S.S Bookshops Limited from 1991 to 1993, after which he retired to focus on his private firm.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Otunba Samson Somotun was deeply involved in community and social activities. He was a founding member of the Cathedral Goodwill Society, Sagamu, in April 1985, where he served as the pioneer Financial Secretary until his passing. Additionally, he was an active member of both the Remo Committee of Twelve and the Remo Committee Friends, holding the positions of Social and Financial Secretary in both social clubs until his demise. In his youth, he showcased his athletic prowess as a talented footballer, earning the nickname "Gbako" for his skillful performances as a left-back on the field.
Acknowledged for his gentle demeanor, humility, and inclusive nature, Otunba Samson Somotun was beloved by all who knew him. His role as the Otunba Aragbanla of the Ilupeju Kingdom and head of the Adetu dynasty highlighted his leadership within his family and community. Despite his many responsibilities, he remained a devoted family man, cherishing the blessings of marriage and fatherhood.
Otunba Samson Adebayo Somotun's legacy lives on as a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence, his dedication to community service, and his enduring love for his family. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and accomplishments that continue to inspire those who knew him.
